Paintings From Scripture
"Song of Life: Brazos Bend Natives"; oil on panel; 24"x 18"
My first oil painting in over a decade relates that Beauty and Danger live together in Nature, according to God's design. This is related to my "Consider the Lilies" series, although it is an American Lotus, rather than a lily. In Matthew 6, we are told to be like the flowers of the field that rely on God for their Robes of Splendor. We can trust the Lord to provide, stop worrying about such things, and pour our energies into living for Him!
"Mallard in the Pink"; Pastel; 16"x 20" image
At the Zoo in Abilene, Texas, I caught this migrating Mallard Duck resting in the Flamingo Pool. It seemed very watchful of this gaudy group that stalked the waters seeking food. It's bright yellow-orange bill stood out to me, anchoring the scene amid the swirling pinks and greens. This scene reminds me of Job 12:7-10, where Job tells his friends that the birds and other creatures could teach us that Creator God is in control of all life on earth.
"View of El Avila From Las Mercedes"; Watercolor & ink; 8"x 10" image
This scene from our time in Caracas, Venezuela, is a personal reminder of God's care for us as we traveled and worked all over the world. God's providential care and the Lord's guidance keep me active and creating, my true Calling and gift from the Holy Spirit. What a blessing to know my purpose in life!
"Sycamore Tenacity"; Pastel; 11"x14" image
This was a scene that captured my memory while traveling several times to Oklahoma recently, crossing the Arbuckle Mountains. I am used to seeing huge sycamores beside the rivers in Central and South Texas, so this smaller one that clung to the rocky cliff face captured my imagination! It reminds me of my mama as she works to care for her ailing husband, hanging tough and praising God through the good and the bad.
"Dagger Point: Aransas NWR": Pastel; 16"x20"
I love the wind-swept oaks along the Texas Coastal Plains! At Dagger Point in the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, we see the living and dead trees in a tableau of the very essence of Life-and-Death Matters. Trees have a way of teaching us to hang together to weather the storms of life, teaching us that Life is precious and worth protecting. In God's Word, the Psalms often speak of Nature witnessing the Power of God.
"Pearl of Great Price"; acrylics; 24" x 30"
Selling everything he had, the wise merchant invested all he had in the Pearl of Great Price -- all in, as the saying goes. Jesus Christ asked us to do this, to invest all we are and all we have in living for our Lord God. Are you investing in Eternal Life or Eternal Destruction? Those are our choices.
Around this pearl is inscribed the commandments "The greatest command is this: Hear, O Israel, the Lord is One! Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. And the second command is like it. Love your neighbor as yourself.", from Jesus Christ's lesson found in Matthew 13: 45-46 of the Good News. So Love is the currency with which we invest in Eternal Life.
