"In judging art shows within the local school systems or for adult competitions, I am seeing problems with presentation, as well as with the categorization of artwork. Paintings need to be considered carefully and put in the proper category -- if the subject, art technique or basic materials are unusual, you may wish to compete with other innovative work in "Abstract and Experimental" or in the "Mixed Media" category.

"Be sure that your work is framed according to the show guidelines, with all edges of a canvas painted (for Gallery-wrapped canvases). If someone tells you to leave that edge as white canvas, he or she is departing from tradition in this part of the world. In fact, it is best to carry your image around the edge in such a way that the painting seems to gain dimensionality. That image would go all the way to the wall. In art competition, try to see the event not as a chance to win ribbons but as a chance to share what you have learned and to learn from the judge and other artists."
